Discovering the old town of Nice

With its shady alleys, colourful facades and typical Mediterranean shutters, the old town is the historic heart of Nice.

Located east of the Bay of Angels, between the Albert 1st Garden and the Parc de la Colline du Château, old Nice is the oldest and most typical district. You can enjoy the cafes, bars, restaurants and shops.

During your visit, be sure to take a stroll among the colors and sun at Cours Saleya, one of the most important arteries in the old town.

You can also stroll through the alleys of Old Nice including the Place du Palais de justice, the Place Rossetti which houses the beautiful Sainte-Réparate Cathedral and the Place Saint François.

The streets of Old Nice

Place Masséna

Located in the heart of Nice, the Place Masséna is the meeting point of the French inhabitants since 1840.  It is a central area of the city of Nice, it connects the Promenade des Anglais, the old part of Nice, the pedestrian zone, the Promenade du Paillon and the avenue Jean Médecin.

The red facades of the buildings that surround it, the fountain of the sun and the black and white pavements, make the identity of the place Masséna.

It is partly in this true meeting place that the great events of the city take place and that parade every year the famous floats of the Carnival of Nice.

Place Saint-François

Located between the places Masséna and Rossetti, the place Saint-François is known mainly for its fish market around the fountain with dolphins.

This place full of history is surrounded by sublime buildings in baroque style, namely the old Hotel-de-City of baroque style built in the sixteenth century and inscribed to historical monuments it is today the municipal palace of Nice as well as the majestic church of the Franciscans dating from the thirteenth century became today the new theater of Nice after its renovation. It is dominated by the impressive tower of Saint-François which was built in the 13th century as a bell tower for the church and convent of the Franciscans, before becoming a clock tower after the Revolution.

Place Rossetti

Located in the heart of the old town, Place Rossetti is considered to be the tourist heart of Old Nice. This completely pedestrian square is one of the most lively in the city with its terraces of bars and restaurants as well as its famous Fenocchio glacier.

With its ochre facades, fountain and baroque cathedral, Place Rossetti is one of the most picturesque squares in Nice.

It houses an emblematic monument of Old Nice, the sumptuous cathedral Sainte Réparate which is a baroque church housing a plethora of works of art.

At the end of Rue Rossetti, a staircase will take you up to the hill of the castle of Nice.

To the east of Old Nice, you will find the park of the Hill of the Castle, it overlooks the old Nice. It is the highest point of the city, to access it, you have the choice to go on foot, by elevator or aboard the small tourist train.

The park of the Castle Hill offers different panoramic views of the mountains, the port, the Bay of Angels and the city of Nice. You will also discover a majestic artificial waterfall.

A stroll on the Promenade des Anglais

Along the Mediterranean coast facing the Baie des Anges, between the airport of Nice and the dock of the United States, you can not stay in Nice without strolling on one of the most famous avenue in the world La Promenade des Anglais. With its flowers and palm trees, blue chairs, roller skates, bike path, beaches, cafes and restaurants, you can walk or cycle along this seven-kilometer avenue.

Some events take place every year on the Promenade des Anglais, such as the Carnival of Nice or the festival of flowers.

From the Promenade des Anglais, you can reach the Castle hill and the old town of Nice. Going in the other direction, you will pass by an architectural jewel, the Masséna museum, which is located in a beautiful villa with a magnificent garden. Further on, you will reach the Museum of Fine Arts in Nice.

Located on a hill to the east of the city of Nice on the border of Villefranche-sur-Mer, the park of Mont Boron is a forest park with rich and varied vegetation. It offers many hiking trails, picnic areas, petanque courts, a sports course of 1.5 km, etc.

This place for walking and relaxing, offers superb views of the Cap Ferrat, the Villefranche bay and the Baie des Anges up to l’Estérel.

At the top, you will discover the fort of Mont Alban, a 16th century military fortification.

The Saint-Nicolas Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox religious building that rises in the center of the city of Nice. It is one of the most important and oldest buildings outside Russia.

Inside, you will find very rich decorations, adorned with multiple icons, frescoes, carved woodwork and an iconostasis of metal pushed and chiseled.

With the domes typical of Russian architecture, it’s like being in Moscow!

La place Garibaldi

Take a stroll on one of the most beautiful squares in the city of Nice. Place Garibaldi is located on the northern edge of the old part of Nice. Built in 1773, it is the oldest large square in the city and one of its emblematic places.

Surrounded by Nice buildings with ochre facades, Place Garibaldi houses a majestic statue of General Giuseppe Garibaldi. Many shops also surround the square as well as terraces of restaurants and cafes.

Garibaldi Square is built on the remains of the city at different times. Under it, an archaeological crypt tells its story for the great happiness of tourists.

The Place Garibaldi is a true place of relaxation and meeting of the people of Nice.

The museums of Nice

Musée Matisse

Located inside the garden of the Arenas de Cimiez in a 17th century villa, this museum is dedicated to the painter Henri Matisse. An extensive collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs by the eminent Fauvist artist is on display.

The collection also includes personal objects of the artist, such as ceramics, stained glass and documents. Among the works exhibited: «Woman reading», «The happiness of living», «The blue nudes» or «The red serving.

Le palais Lascaris

Located in the heart of Old Nice, the Palais Lascaris was a former 17th century aristocratic residence converted into a museum.  It houses a prestigious collection of about 500 ancient musical instruments. The Palais Lascaris is the most remarkable monument of the civil baroque niçois by its monumental staircase decorated with frescoes and its luxuriously decorated lounges.

Le musée National Marc Chagall

Located at the bottom of the hill of Cimiez, this museum is entirely devoted to the religious work of the painter Marc Chagall. It exhibits the artist’s series of seventeen paintings illustrating the biblical message illustrating Genesis, the Exodus and the Song of Songs. You will also see sketches, sculptures and stained glass by the famous painter.

Musée des Beaux-Arts

The Museum of Fine Arts is housed in a magnificent Italian Renaissance villa built on the initiative of the Ukrainian princess Kotchoubey.

In this museum, you will discover an important collection of works that retrace the entire history of art from the 16th to the 20th century as well as a collection of works by the painter Jules Chéret.

Among the most emblematic works of this museum: Agnolo Bronzino’s Crucifixion (1540), Raoul Dufy’s La console jaune aux deux fenêtres (1948), Jules Chéret’s Le déjeuner sur l’herbe (1904), Pierre Bonnard’s Fenêtre ouverte sur la Seine (1912), Allegory of the Earth and Allegory of the Water by Jan I Brueghel & Hendrick Van Balen (17th century), Le pêcheur napolitain by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1858).

Explore history through photography

Located in the heart of Old Nice in a picturesque building, the Charles Nègre Photography Museum offers temporary exhibitions of the greatest names in photography or thematic by presenting trends, ranging from ancient photography to digital images. This museum focuses on images that tell the story of the city and the region.

Musée des Arts asiatiques

Located in Phoenix Park on the Promenade des Anglais, the Asian Arts Museum explores the diversity of Asian art from antiquity to contemporary times.

This modern place is housed in a white marble and glass building evoking the spirit of the major civilizations of Asia.

The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, shows and entertainment including the celebration of the “tea ceremony”.

Musée d’Art moderne et d’Art contemporain

Immerse yourself in the art from the 1950s to today at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Also called MAMAC, it is located in the heart of the city next to Garibaldi Square. This large museum with a marble facade, has nearly 1400 works by 350 artists of various movements. You will discover the works of local celebrities. Among the collections on display, you can contemplate two major figures of 20th century art: a permanent room unique in the world with some twenty works by Yves Klein and one of the most important collections in Europe of the artist Niki de Saint Phalle.

Located in the heart of the Allianz Riviera stadium, the Sport Museum presents a large collection of objects from the 16th century to today.

The beaches of Nice

Cocoon Beach Club

It is a private beach open on the Promenade des Anglais. It offers lounge areas, a swimming pool with sea view and a quality restaurant.
